 Duane E. Reynolds

2010 William Oxley Thompson Award Winner

Degrees obtained:
M.H.A. Health Administration, 2004

Duane ReynoldsDuane Reynolds has emerged as a leader in operations and diversity leadership—strengths that were evident during his years at Ohio State.

While in graduate school, Reynolds won first place in an essay competition with his work on diverse populations in health care organizations. He also helped create an education program on diversity and inclusion, components of which are still used at Ohio State.

As chair of the diversity committee of the Health Services Management and Policy (HSMP) Alumni Society, Reynolds leads the planning and coordination of curriculum enhancement within the HSMP graduate program, as well as diversity education training for students and alumni. He also oversees the planning for the group’s annual diversity breakfast, diversity lecture series, and Women’s Leadership Forum, in which health care leaders are invited to speak on diversity-related issues impacting the field.

“Duane is a caring individual and strives to find ways to be inclusive of all people while finding common ground,” wrote Kelly J. Scheiderer, administrator of emergency medicine at Ohio State and chair of the alumni services committee of the HSMP Alumni Society.

Rebecca L. Schmale, former system vice president for organizational development at OhioHealth, hired Reynolds for a newly created project manager position. Within a year, he had helped the organization win two national awards through his work in the development and implementation of the OhioHealth Corporate University. He received several awards during his tenure, including HR Customer Service, Power of One, and Prism.

Reynolds next was recruited to a senior manager position at Johns Hopkins, where he soon was selected to participate in the prestigious Leadership Development Program. “Duane has been quickly recognized as a rising star within the Hopkins organization. It is unprecedented to be invited to join the LDP after just one year at Hopkins,” wrote Rebecca Zuccarelli, senior director of service excellence.

Under Reynolds’s leadership, patient satisfaction in the rheumatology clinics at Hopkins has risen from the 10th percentile to the 90th percentile or better. The rheumatology division has consistently performed well financially and enjoys high employee satisfaction.

Reynolds has been involved in multiple business development initiatives at Hopkins, including the creation of the Myositis Center, a clinical and research program that has earned an international reputation.

Reynolds has also demonstrated commitment to diversity leadership. In addition to co-chairing the Making a Difference at Hopkins affinity group, he belongs to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Diversity Council and is preceptor for the Administrative Residency Program.

Reynolds was recently promoted from senior manager to assistant administrator of the rheumatology division, which has been ranked No. 1 by U.S. News and World Report for six consecutive years.

Melissa Helicke, administrator of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins, commented, “Some individuals are hired into roles based on size and complexity, but others excel beyond management to leadership within their role as a result of their ambition, work ethic, and talent. Duane is the latter.”
