Terina Joann Matthews
In many fields of business, one key to success is an M.B.A. degree. Helping give minority students access to that key is more than a job for Terina Matthews- it's a calling. At Ohio State's Fisher College of Business, Matthews was the associate director of admissions and recruitment for the M.B.A. program. She now is corporate recruiter for Yum! Brands, in Louisville, Ky. She gives freely of her time to help young people develop personally and professionally. 'Its a path of service she has followed since earning master's degrees in education in 1996 and labor and human resources in 1998.

While she served as the associate director of M.B.A. admissions and recruitment, Matthews's dedication to finding effective recruiting strategies increased minority admissions from 10 percent to 24 percent over three years. One example is an event she organized in April 2004, during which the Fisher College hosted M.B.A. applicants and prospective students at its third annual Minority Visitation Weekend. The event gave minority students who had already selected the Fisher College an opportunity to see and hear firsthand what the college-and Ohio State-could offer them.

She helped graduate and undergraduate students as a mentor and active participant in student organizations such as the Council of Black Students in Administration, Fisher Black M.B.A. Association, and Fisher Graduate Human Resource Association. Her leadership was instrumental in the creation of the college's first Graduate Mentoring Program, the first Black History Month Speaker Series, and a monthly community volunteer program.

Her own career path encompasses both academia and the corporate world. As a recruiter for Limited Brands, Matthews made a point of attracting and retaining Ohio State students and graduates as interns and full-time employees. She also has established relationships between the Fisher College of Business and several other companies, including AEP, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Cardinal Health.

Other staff roles that Matthews held at Ohio State include director of residence halls, coordinator of African American student services, interim director of student judicial affairs, and director of student affairs orientation. She has been a leader in the Columbus chapter of the National Black Master's in Business Administration Association (NBMBAA) and its Ohio State chapter, obtaining book scholarships for students in the college and hosting graduates at corporate recruitment events. She has devoted time and resources to many programs and events, such as NBMBAA's speed networking event and corporate mixer. In recognition of her impact on the lives of minority students, she was awarded the first Black M.B.A. Association Outstanding Alumni Award.

In the larger Columbus community, Matthews volunteers with United Way, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and the Columbus Kidney Foundation. She also is a volunteer mentor for high school students through her church, assisting with college visits, job interview preparation, and career tips.

Through her consistent efforts on behalf of the university, its students, and her community, Matthews embodies her daily mantra: "Of those to whom much is given, much is required."
