COLUMBUS--Seven prominent Ohio State alumni are recipients of the 2010 African American Alumni Society Awards. This is the second class of award-winners, and awards are scheduled to be presented during the All Decade African American Alumni Reunion Gala on Saturday, May 1.
Here are the 2010 award winners:
Frank W. Hale Honorary Leadership Award
- Dr. Mac A. Stewart ('73): The longtime university administrator most recently served as Ohio State's chief diversity officer and vice provost for minority affairs.
Jesse Owens Influential Athlete Award
- Clark C. Kellogg ('96): One of the most accomplished and respected men's college basketball television analysts, Kellogg previously received the Distinguished Service Award from Ohio State.
Samella Lewis Professional Achievement Award
- Dr. Abraham L. Davis ('69): Dr. Davis is a professor of political science at Morehouse College. He has published three books and lectured at 12 universities in the U.S. and around the world.
- The Honorable Marcia L. Fudge ('75): A congresswoman for Ohio's 11th District, she holds the distinction of being the first African American elected mayor of Warrensville Heights, Ohio.
- Stan Jefferson ('74): A longtime coach and educator in the Mansfield (Ohio) City Schools, Jefferson currently serves as director of player development for Ohio State's football team.
- John B. Williams ('50): A "buffalo soldier" who served America in World War II, Williams later won a landmark affirmative action class-action lawsuit against the Columbus post office.
Larry Williamson Distinguished Service Award
- Tamira M. Moon ('01, '04): The project director at Georgia's Division of Public Health, Moon has been an influential advocate for health and fitness.
These award-winners were nominated by Ohio State alumni and friends and final decisions were made in March. They were judged on career accomplishments and impact and service to Ohio State and the broader community.
