We award more than $3,000 annually from our Undergraduate Scholarship Endowment Fund (principal balance: $103,017). Four students received scholarships this year.
The endowment continues to grow with the help of the Fallfest silent auction. Alumni donate a wide range of items to be auctioned, including cut-your-own Christmas trees, chutney gift boxes, a weekend stay at a vacation resort, original artwork, and various Ohio State items.
OUR ODDEST TRADITION
Our college nominated Maudine Ormsby, a Holstein cow, for Homecoming Queen in 1926, and she won when other candidates were disqualified. We have nominated Maudine every year since then.
DID YOU KNOW?
One of America’s favorite ice cream treats, the Drumstick, was developed with the help of food scientists at Ohio State. The manufacturers, the Parker brothers, consulted with Ohio State after discovering that the Drumstick cones became soggy after being frozen. The scientists recommended that they line them with a barrier. The brothers decided to use chocolate to coat the inside of the cones, and the rest is history.
During the late 1800s, researchers at public universities saw that farmers did not readily accept agricultural innovations being developed on their campuses. Youth programs became an innovative way to introduce new farming technology. A.B. Graham, superintendent of Extension at Ohio State, started one such program in Clark County in 1902, which is considered the birth of the 4-H program in the United States.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act, which allowed for the creation of land-grant colleges and paved the way for the establishment of the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, which later became The Ohio State University.
The Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center started in Columbus as the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station. In 1892, it was moved by wagon train to Wooster. OARDC researchers continue to focus on better food and fiber production, environmental and water quality issues for rural and urban populations, and new and improved products for use in agriculture.
